In Defence Of Reason: Multi-Level Debate

Level 1: Conventional Debate

  • Individual speakers

  • Speakers will choose a topic of their choice and will speak either FOR/AGAINST the topic as per their choice

  • Speaking time will be 4 mins

  • Rebuttal time will be 1 min- open to all participants after speaking time

  • If a participant is not asked any question in rebuttal round, that participant will be awarded full marks under rebuttal.

  • Top 10 qualify for the next round.


Level 2: Devil’s Advocate

  1. Two panels of 5 participants each will be made according to scoreboard from the first level.

  2. A topic will be given and the participants will have 2 mins for the preparation.

  3. After the preparatory period, the panel will start speaking taking turns in the clockwise manner.

  4. Each participant will present one argument each time they get the chance.

  5. ⁠No argument given by any participant should be repeated.

  6. The participant who fails to speak within 30 sec will be eliminated.

  7. After one panellist is eliminated, new topic will be given.

  8. Top 2 from each panel will advance to the next level


Level 3: LINCOLN-DOUGLAS DEBATE

  • Speaking order and times are:

    • Affirmative Constructive (AC) - 3mins

    • Cross-Examination of the Affirmative by the Negative - 1mins

    • Negative Constructive (NC) - 4min

    • ⁠Cross-Examination of the Negative by the Affirmative - 1mins

    • 1st Affirmative Rebuttal (1AR) - 2mins

    • Negative Rebuttal (NR) - 3mins

    • 2nd Affirmative Rebuttal (2AR) - 2mins

  • Preparation Time:

    • Initial preparation time of 15mins will be given

    • All the rounds will be held consecutively

  • PURPOSE OF SPEAKERS:

    • Affirmative Constructive (AC): The Affirmative presents definitions, value, criteria and main contentions.

    • Cross-Examination of the Affirmative by the Negative: The Negative asks questions to clarify or expose flaws in the Affirmative’s case.

    • Negative Constructive (NC): The negative presents their case and begins attacking the Affirmative case.

    • Cross-Examination of the Negative by the Affirmative: Affirmative questions the Negative to find contradictions.

    • 1st Affirmative Rebuttal (1AR): Affirmative rebuts the Negative’s case and defends their own.

    • Negative Rebuttal (NR): Negative rebuts the Affirmative’s points, defends their own and summarizes their side.

    • 2nd Affirmative Rebuttal (2AR): Affirmative’s final speech- defends key points and gives closing arguments

  • In the penultimate round, two panels of 2 participants each will be made based on scoreboard from previous round.

  • Each panel will see a 1v1 debate, one participant being AFFIRMATIVE while the other being NEGATIVE chosen by toss.

  • In the end of this round, ONE participant from each panel will advance to the final round while the other being eliminated.


Level 4: FINAL ROUND (LINCOLN-DOUGLAS DEBATE)

  • The final round has the same LINCOLN DOUGLAS format.

  • Two participants qualifying from each panel in the previous round will debate against each other.

  • The Affirmative and Negative will be decided based on the cumulative points from Level 1 through Level 3.

  • The participant with the higher points will get to choose the side.

  • The winner will be decided from this round
